A fire broke out in the lower part of the 19-storey Twin Park building in the Bronx an hour before noon local time. The New York Fire Department said about 200 of its members had intervened at the scene.

In addition to the 19 dead, New York Mayor Eric Adams told CNN that he has so far confirmed 63 injured. 13 of them were in a critical condition in hospitals. Most of the injured inhaled the smoke.

There are many immigrants in the predominantly working-class neighborhood, and Adams said “many” of the building’s residents are Muslims who immigrated to New York from The Gambia, AFP writes.

According to the firefighters, the fire broke out in the bedroom of a duplex apartment on the second and third floors. The doors of this apartment were found open, allowing the rapid spread of thick smoke to the upper floors.

“We found the victims on every floor, on the stairs, and carried them into cardiac or respiratory arrest,” Daniel Negro, a fire brigade chief, told reporters. “The last time we had a loss of life that could be so horrific was in a fire over 30 years ago, also here in the Bronx,” Added paella. He referred to a fire at the Happy Land nightclub, which in 1990 killed 87 people and caused an arson.

Sunday’s tragedy in New York occurred just four days after a fire in a Philadelphia apartment building killed 12 people, including eight children. It is also the deadliest apartment building fire in the United States since 2017, when 13 people were killed in an apartment building in the Bronx after a three-year-old boy played with a stove there.
