Barcelona. At the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, they lit a new tower of the Virgin Mary on Wednesday evening. It happened to mark the completion of this tower.
El Periódico de Catalunya reported on its website.
The lights, including a star on top of the tower, appeared at 7.50 p.m. local time. Before it lights up, talk to the people gathered around the temple via video message Pope Francis.
He paid a special tribute to the “poorest city dwellers, the sick, the elderly, those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic” and other people facing hardship.
The Divine Liturgy was also held in the cathedral on Wednesday afternoon. Catholic believers around the world celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on Wednesday, December 8th.
Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau did not attend the star’s party. However, other representatives of the city council and the Catalan government took part in it.
The 138-meter Virgin Mary’s Tower will be the second tallest of the 18 towers planned for this building. It is crossed by the Tower of Jesus Christ with a height of more than 172 meters, however, it is not yet completed.
The Sagrada Familia was designed by Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi. Construction began in 1882, and at the time of Gaudí’s death in 1926, the temple had barely been completed in a quarter of a year.
The project was due to be completed by 2026, the centenary of Gaudí’s death. However, construction was halted due to a pandemic Corona Virus, píše El Periódico de Catalunya.
The Sagrada Familia was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005.
