The Turkmen president ordered the door to hell that has been burning for more than 50 years

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov ordered to find a way to quench a gas crater in the Karakum Desert, known as Hell’s Gate. It was reported to AFP on Saturday.

Natural gas has leaked into the crater near the oasis of Darvas since 1971. In the meantime, the place has become a popular tourist attraction. Its closure was ordered by President Berdymukhamedov as early as 2010, but so far it has not been successful.

The crater arose as a result of human activity, when Soviet geologists discovered deposits of natural gas in the area and the subsoil collapsed, creating a crater with a diameter of 100 meters and a depth of about 20 meters.

For safety reasons – to prevent the gas from spreading to surrounding areas – geologists decided in 1971 to ignite the leaking gas. Their original idea was that the gas field would soon burn, but that didn’t happen: the gas had been leaking and burning continuously for more than 50 years.

Berdymukhamedov warned at a government meeting on Friday that the crater has been burning huge amounts of gas for many years, “Raw materials are lost, their exports can be harvested and greatly used to improve the life and well-being of our people”.

He also indicated that the gas crater was on fire “Negatively affects the environment and the health of the people who live near them”.

Berdymukhamedov later ordered Deputy Prime Minister Shahim Abdirahman to do so “Scholars gathered – and if necessary, brought in foreign advisors – and found a way to put out the burning pit”.

In November 2013, a Canadian explorer and explorer, George Corones, went down to the bottom of the crater and conducted research there – finding that the temperature had reached 1,000 degrees Celsius – and collected samples. He managed to find bacteria living at the bottom of the hole despite the high temperatures. This is a bacteria that does not exist anywhere on the surface of the Earth and thrives, although it lives in a small ecosystem at the bottom of a hot crater.
