The Turkmen president is looking for the scholars who will destroy the Gate of Hell. It has been on fire continuously for half a century

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov ordered to find a way to quench a gas crater in the Karakum Desert, known as Hell’s Gate. It was reported to AFP on Saturday.

Natural gas has leaked into the crater near the oasis of Darvas since 1971. In the meantime, the place has become a popular tourist attraction. Its closure was ordered by President Berdymukhamedov as early as 2010, but so far it has not been successful.

They lit the gas and burned for more than 50 years

The crater arose as a result of human activity, when Soviet geologists discovered deposits of natural gas in the area and the subsoil collapsed, creating a crater with a diameter of 100 meters and a depth of about 20 meters.

For safety reasons so that the gas does not spread to the surrounding areas, geologists decided in 1971 to ignite the leaking gas. Their original idea was that the gas field would soon burn, but this did not happen: the gas had been leaking and burning continuously for more than 50 years.

Berdymukhamedov warned at a government meeting on Friday that the crater has been burning huge amounts of gas for many years, “Raw materials, which can be largely gained from exports and used to improve the lives and well-being of our people, are being lost.” He also indicated that the burning gas crater “negatively affect the environment and the health of the people who live near it”.

Bacteria live there that are not found anywhere else on earth

Then Berdymukhamedov ordered Deputy Prime Minister Shahim Abdul Rahman “to gather scientists (if necessary, to attract foreign consultants) and find a way to put out the burning pit.”

In November 2013, Canadian traveler and explorer George Corones, who conducted research there, went down to the crater of the volcano, found that the temperature had reached 1000 degrees Celsius, and collected samples. He managed to find bacteria living at the bottom of the hole despite the high temperatures. This is a bacteria that does not exist anywhere on the surface of the Earth and thrives, although it lives in a small ecosystem at the bottom of a hot crater.
