Wildflower, the premier middle-distance race in the US, has seen Leanda Cave miss out on retaining her title as she finishes in 4th place.
After a blistering swim and strong bike leg - it looks like she faded on the run and finished in 4th place.
Heather Jackson of the US took the win in stunning fashion by carving out a course record of 4:26:29 and a run leg of 1:21:08 compared to Leanda’s 4:36:24 and run leg of 1:31:11.
Cave might be smarting at this result, having picked up a series of DNS as she got over an energy sapping virus, and had made this her comeback race and focus. Indeed, she was in fiery and competitive form on Twitter when, in response to this preview, she tweeted:
Trust me…… I am so ready to race!
As more news comes out of California, I shall attempt to find out what happened on the run leg and if the virus which ruled her out of Ironman Melbourne, Ironman Galveston and Abu Dhabi caused her any issues here - but Leanda can console herself that on the day - an athlete turned up in record breaking shape to finally take away her title.
