Weekend Preview: Ironman Lanzarote, Ironman Texas and much more….

It’s a big weekend on the WTC Ironman circuit this weekend - with the series rolling into Europe and one of the biggest US races in town. When you add to the mix Ironman Florida 70.3, Ironman Austria - and on the domestic scene the Marazion Middle - there’s lots of build up to cover.

Here is your weekly round up of who is racing where!

Rachel Joyce withdraws from Ironman Florida 70.3

Rachel Joyce has today announced that she will not be racing this weekend at Ironman Florida 70.3.

Joyce, one of the most talented British long course athletes, and heir apparent to Chrissie Wellington’s thrown, was the favourite to win this race. No reason has been given yet as to why she has withdrawn but a serious injury can probably be ruled out of the equation given that she followed up the news with that of her next race being 4 weeks later at Ironman Kansas 70.3 instead.

I suspect that it is likely she has extended her rest period in between races after the stunning 2nd that was recorded at Ironman Melbourne, so hopefully nothing sinister that will disrupt her season.

Joyce takes 2nd in blistering Ironman Melbourne

Ironman Melbourne (raced as the Asia Pacific Championship) got of to a blistering start as an event. Whilst Caroline Steffen laid down a crazy-quick time 8:34:51 to take the win, GB’s very own Rachel Joyce was recording a personal best to finish second in 8:46:09. In the process of taking 2nd, Joyce finished with a 3:05:02 marathon.

In the men’s race there were 2 Ironman warhorses battling out for the win. Craig Alexander defeated Cameron Brown for the title of Asia-Pacific Champion. In terms of British interest, Joel Jameson, winner of Outlaw 2011, was racing in the pro division and cracked the 9-hour barrier. He finished in a time of 8:59:28, which was good enough for 25th pro but 33rd overall.

More to come as news filters out of Melbourne - including updates on any British age-group athletes who have podiumed.

Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship Preview

The Ironman series tries again to start the 2012 calendar this year, as we arrive in Melbourne for the Asia-Pacific Championships.

This is another race that can claim ‘the best field outside of Kona’ and with good reason. As one of the three P-4000 class races and offering up the title of Asia-Pacific Champion, Melbourne will play host to the best long distance athletes from not just the Asia-Pacific region, but the globe.

There is British interest in the men’s and ladies race here.

Abu Dhabi Triathlon results - The Brits do alright

Abu Dhabi Triathlon 2012

Wow. What a race. Casual fans of triathlon or non-converts sometimes wonder what can be exciting about a long distance 8+ hour race but it’s days like this that make you remember how great these kind of races are.

Both the men’s and womens editions produced fantastic races that ended in very close and relatively sprint finishes.

The mens race was at such a pace that the top 10 finishers broke the course record and in the ladies race the winner produced a composed and exciting finish. Unfortunately for the first year ever we had no podium Brits but that’s not to say that there weren’t some great performances to report on.

Crowie Racing the Brits in Aus

With 3-time world champ having just announced that he will be racing in Australia at the upcoming Ironman Asia-Pacific Championships (Melbourne, March 22) , I thought I’d take a look at what pro’s have registered to compete.

In the ladies race Leanda Cave and Rachel Joyce are down as starters. The mens sole representative is Joel Jameson.
