Interview: Natalie Barnard talks her Lisboa podium and 2012 targets

Natalie Barnard, the former national swimming champion turned triathlete - recently showed her strength across the three disciplines at the Lisboa International Triathlon. She came third in what was a good middle-distance field despite problems with her training schedule in the run up.

Natalie has also been announced for Ironman UK 70.3, so I thought it a good time to interview her on her recent good performance and how she feels she will do against the best of British over 70.3 miles.

Skipper wins Marshman and all the weekend action

In my weekend preview last Thursday I said this would be a quiet bank holiday for British action. I was wrong!

Wins and podiums were abound and the first UK middle distance triathlon, Marshman, was raced under difficult weather conditions were the field were obliterated by Joe Skipper.

Rowatt takes the win in Portugal

Alison Rowatt took top spot in Portugal yesterday at the Lisboa International Triathlon. Rowatt, who is a Scottish Middle Distance National Champion, improved on her 2010 best of 2nd and claimed the victory here.

In second was Irish triathlete Aoife Lynch, who flew totally under my radar.

Rowatt and Lynch had company on the podium in the form of Natalie Barnard, who came third this year. Barnard may be disappointed with the result after coming second last year.

Weekend Preview: Long course pro’s in action

For a very busy week on the WTC circuit, there are remarkably few pro’s hailing from the British Isle’s in action this weekend. There are some fantastic races though in action, the results of which will have an impact on the WTC rankings table.

This week will also see the very first middle distance race on UK shores - The Marshman - which contains a very decent age-group field and some familiar names. I can’t wait!

Barnard announced for Ironman UK 70.3

News of pro entries are coming thick and fast for the Ironman UK 70.3 race in Wimbleball. After yesterdays breaking news that Mikel Elgezabel was defending his title, GBR elite lady, Natalie Barnard will be trying her hand at Wimbleball for the first time.

Barnard comes from a strong swimming background and has been a World and European Biathlete champion. Normally racing on the ITU circuit, Barnard will be looking to bring her strength and speed to this notoriously difficult 70.3 distance.

She will be racing in the pro category against Ironman legend Bella Bayliss, and Corinne Abraham - with plenty of other ladies expected to declare as the race date draws nearer.
