Big weekend review: A Bayliss double, Paterson claims World Title and breakthrough Abraham performance.

It was a huge weekend on the WTC circuit and most of the headlines were written at Ironman Lanzarote – namely Graves suicide drive on the bike and the Bayliss’ demonstrating the perfectly paced Ironman to take double podiums.

Lanzarote wasn’t the only race though and British Isles triathletes were performing at Ironman Texas, Columbia, the ITU World Cross Tri World Championships and much more.

Skipper wins Marshman and all the weekend action

In my weekend preview last Thursday I said this would be a quiet bank holiday for British action. I was wrong!

Wins and podiums were abound and the first UK middle distance triathlon, Marshman, was raced under difficult weather conditions were the field were obliterated by Joe Skipper.

Latest at Wildflower: Leanda finishes in 4th

Wildflower, the premier middle-distance race in the US, has seen Leanda Cave miss out on retaining her title as she finishes in 4th place.

After a blistering swim and strong bike leg - it looks like she faded on the run and finished in 4th place.

Heather Jackson of the US took the win in stunning fashion by carving out a course record of 4:26:29 and a run leg of 1:21:08 compared to Leanda’s 4:36:24 and run leg of 1:31:11.

Cave might be smarting at this result, having picked up a series of DNS as she got over an energy sapping virus, and had made this her comeback race and focus. Indeed, she was in fiery and competitive form on Twitter when, in response to this preview, she tweeted:

Trust me…… I am so ready to race!

As more news comes out of California, I shall attempt to find out what happened on the run leg and if the virus which ruled her out of Ironman Melbourne, Ironman Galveston and Abu Dhabi caused her any issues here - but Leanda can console herself that on the day - an athlete turned up in record breaking shape to finally take away her title.

Leanda Cave is geared up towards Wildflower this weekend

Leanda Cave, currently ranked number 1 worldwide by the WTC, is racing this weekend at the famous U.S Middle distance race, Wildflower.

She will be defending the title this weekend that she won in style last year, however, it certainly won’t be plain sailing. After a decent 4th in Ironman Panama 70.3 (Leanda led most of the race before fading on the run), followed a series of withdrawals from Abu Dhabi, Ironman Galveston 70.3 and Ironman Melbourne. I spoke to Leanda about these withdrawal’s last month and she blamed feelings of uncharacteristic fatigue following the Panama race.

Now after an enforced racing break she is back racing in this high profile and stacked race and has recently blogged over her recent training and racing troubles - and given her view on her chances this weekend.

Weekend Preview: Long course pro’s in action

For a very busy week on the WTC circuit, there are remarkably few pro’s hailing from the British Isle’s in action this weekend. There are some fantastic races though in action, the results of which will have an impact on the WTC rankings table.

This week will also see the very first middle distance race on UK shores - The Marshman - which contains a very decent age-group field and some familiar names. I can’t wait!

Leanda Cave announces new sponsors

Driscoll’s Berries joins the team

Leanda Cave, currently ranked number 1 by the WTC, has announced a new partnership with a company called Driscoll’s Berries.

Driscoll’s Berries are growers of premium fresh berries and distribute world wide.

Leanda is currently preparing for her next triathlon race, Wildflower, were she will be defending her title. I spoke to Leanda a few weeks ago about how her season is planned out and the troubles she is having currently with fatigue. After her withdrawal from Ironman Melbourne, and some time recharging the batteries, and plenty of KPR points in the bag, she will be selecting her races from here on in in order to peak for Kona.

I’d like to wish her and her sponsors the berry-best of luck in the coming season.

You can visit the Driscoll’s Berries website here.

Ironman Galveston 70.3: Brit’s in action

Ironman Texas 70.3 logo

OK - you might have noticed that Lance Armstrong was in this race. It’s kind off what every triathlon site and news feed focussed on in the build up - but the reality is there was so much more to this race in both the men’s and the ladies fields. Being the American WTC Championships, Ironman Galveston 70.3 attracted the cream of the crop in American racers. In the men’s race, Timothy O’Donnell was first place, holding off Sebastien Kienle (2nd) and Ronnie Schildknecht (3rd). The race was a speedy affair with a predictable thrash-fest being conducted on the bike leg.

The ladies race was dominated by Kelly Williamson from USA, who started as pre-race favourite and lived up to that billing. She was followed over the line (after a 5:20 second margin) by Yvonne Van Vlerken and Amy Marsh.

There were representatives from Great Britain and Ireland here - and not all made it to the finish line. Read more for how our Brit’s got on in Texas.

Weekend Preview: Ironman Texas 70.3 & Ironman California 70.3

Updated: 26th March - Amey has withdrawn

You might be forgiven for not noticing later in the week, as Lance-fever will surely descend, but there will be two races on the Ironman 70.3 circuit this weekend.

Ironman 70.3 Texas is on Sunday and is bound to get the attention of not only the tri press but also the mainstream as a certain Lance Armstrong continues his venture towards Kona. But before then we have Ironman 70.3 California on the Saturday. There is Brit interest in both races.
