Interview: Joel Jameson “I want Kona”

Joel Jameson on the bike at Ironman Melbourne

Outlaw 2011 winner, Joel Jameson, is entering his second year as a long distance pro and has set himself the target of Kona qualification in 2012.

After last weekends Ironman Melbourne, which he was targeting for big pro-points, Jameson finished in a disappointing 33rd place overall (25th Male pro). I caught up with Joel to find out what happened and what this means for his Kona 2012 bid.

Joyce takes 2nd in blistering Ironman Melbourne

Ironman Melbourne (raced as the Asia Pacific Championship) got of to a blistering start as an event. Whilst Caroline Steffen laid down a crazy-quick time 8:34:51 to take the win, GB’s very own Rachel Joyce was recording a personal best to finish second in 8:46:09. In the process of taking 2nd, Joyce finished with a 3:05:02 marathon.

In the men’s race there were 2 Ironman warhorses battling out for the win. Craig Alexander defeated Cameron Brown for the title of Asia-Pacific Champion. In terms of British interest, Joel Jameson, winner of Outlaw 2011, was racing in the pro division and cracked the 9-hour barrier. He finished in a time of 8:59:28, which was good enough for 25th pro but 33rd overall.

More to come as news filters out of Melbourne - including updates on any British age-group athletes who have podiumed.

Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship Preview

The Ironman series tries again to start the 2012 calendar this year, as we arrive in Melbourne for the Asia-Pacific Championships.

This is another race that can claim ‘the best field outside of Kona’ and with good reason. As one of the three P-4000 class races and offering up the title of Asia-Pacific Champion, Melbourne will play host to the best long distance athletes from not just the Asia-Pacific region, but the globe.

There is British interest in the men’s and ladies race here.
