Ironman 70.3 UK to open 50 last minute places

IRONMAN 70.3 UK organisers have announced that they are to release 50 places into the closed Ironman 70.3 UK on a first come first served basis.

The additional places have become available due to some changes made to the setup at the venue which has freed up more space and the introduction of a 2 wave start allowing for the 50 additional entries.

Interview: Joe Skipper on his Marshman win and targeting Ironman UK 70.3

Fresh from smashing the field at Marshman, the first middle distance UK tri of the year, is Joe Skipper - a National Middle Distance champion.

I caught up with this ambitious triathlete who has already won Marshman, came 6th at the recent Tristar Cannes and has just returned from a brutal training camp with former Outlaw winner Paul Hawkins. This guy likes to train hard.

In this interview, Joe speaks about a very good 3 weeks in his career and how he hopes this will prove a spring board for top performances in some of Britain’s biggest long distance races.

Interview: Natalie Barnard talks her Lisboa podium and 2012 targets

Natalie Barnard, the former national swimming champion turned triathlete - recently showed her strength across the three disciplines at the Lisboa International Triathlon. She came third in what was a good middle-distance field despite problems with her training schedule in the run up.

Natalie has also been announced for Ironman UK 70.3, so I thought it a good time to interview her on her recent good performance and how she feels she will do against the best of British over 70.3 miles.

Barnard announced for Ironman UK 70.3

News of pro entries are coming thick and fast for the Ironman UK 70.3 race in Wimbleball. After yesterdays breaking news that Mikel Elgezabel was defending his title, GBR elite lady, Natalie Barnard will be trying her hand at Wimbleball for the first time.

Barnard comes from a strong swimming background and has been a World and European Biathlete champion. Normally racing on the ITU circuit, Barnard will be looking to bring her strength and speed to this notoriously difficult 70.3 distance.

She will be racing in the pro category against Ironman legend Bella Bayliss, and Corinne Abraham - with plenty of other ladies expected to declare as the race date draws nearer.

The Ironman UK 70.3 2011 champion, Mikel Elgezabel. has announced that he will be returning to Wimbleball to defend his title in 2012.

The Spaniard wasn’t amongst the favourites last year, but a killer bike leg over the hills ensured that he pressed on to victory - beating the likes of race day favourite Stephen Bayliss.

The 2012 race is shaping up to be a cracker and, whilst still too early for he full pro field to be announced, already contains Jon Hotchkiss, Stephen Bayliss, Mark Threlfal, Erich Wegscheider, Kamil van Beijnum, Oliver Simon and Martin Cain. Keep an eye out for Nick Baldwin as well - this young age grouper is a strong candidate for overall amateur and is aiming to turn pro in 2013.

In the ladies, we will see Bella Bayliss in action here again and Corrine Abraham will be looking for KPR points and a podium. Interest in the age group race comes in the form of former track world cycling champion, Rebecca Romero as she continues her Ironman journey towards a target of sub-11 hours in Bolton.

Interview: Corinne Abraham - ‘I want to race against the best’

Corinne Abraham, the long distance multi-sport specialist, had a great race in Ironman Galveston 70.3 at the weekend. She finished 17th Pro lady in a very talented field, which was her first WTC event of the season on the way to (hopefully) Kona qualification.

I caught up with Corinne to find out what her 2012 plans are and what it was like racing in Texas at the weekend.

Interview: Nick Baldwin ‘My plans to turn pro’

Nick Baldwin 2nd 18-24 Ironman Hawaii

Nick Baldwin, the Seychelle-English long course athlete has launched a new website so that his sponsors and fans of the sport can keep track of his progress. At just 23 years old he is one of the most promising long-course age-groupers on the WTC circuit and is aiming to turn pro in 2013.

Nick won his age group at the Abu Dhabi triathlon earlier this season and has big plans for 2012 - so the site is perfectly timed to capitalise on his rise into the pro ranks and provide him with a professional platform in which triathlon fans can follow this up-and-comer.

I caught up with Nick to find out a bit more about him and what his plans were for the rest of the year.

Interview: Lucy Gossage “I want to win Ironman”

Lucy Gossage wins British Elite Duathlon 2012

Lucy Gossage is the Cambridge based 2nd year pro who made a big splash in her first year. After her recent win at the British Duathlon Championships, Beyond Going Long got in contact to find out what her plans were for 2012 and how far she feels she can develop as a pro.

What we found was a very ambitious, determined and obviously talented triathlete ready to burst onto the long course race calendar!
