Big weekend review: A Bayliss double, Paterson claims World Title and breakthrough Abraham performance.

It was a huge weekend on the WTC circuit and most of the headlines were written at Ironman Lanzarote – namely Graves suicide drive on the bike and the Bayliss’ demonstrating the perfectly paced Ironman to take double podiums.

Lanzarote wasn’t the only race though and British Isles triathletes were performing at Ironman Texas, Columbia, the ITU World Cross Tri World Championships and much more.

Abraham clinches 4th at Ironman Texas as records tumble

Corinne Abraham showed her class and form by taking 4th spot at Ironman Texas yesterday. The race was won in record time by the favourite, Mary Beth Ellis in a time of 8:54:58, but Abraham put in a series of PB performances in each leg, which carried her to 9:18:39 - comfortably 4th.

I spoke with Corinne last month and she was in a combatitive mood, saying she wanted to race and prove herself against the best at Kona. Her 17th place at Ironman Galveston 70.3 might have indicated that she was slightly below that field but a closer look at that field showed that it included most of the class ladies racing at the moment - and Corrine certainly looked good against them there.

Now she has a stand out result in a P-2000 race and will climb the KPR table swiftly. She has Ironman UK 70.3 and Ironman New York on her race calendar and is more than capable now of picking up big results there. With New York offering P-4000 - and Abraham demonstrating she knows how to race and peak - I’m not betting against her picking up big points and making Kona.

Weekend Preview: Ironman Lanzarote, Ironman Texas and much more….

It’s a big weekend on the WTC Ironman circuit this weekend - with the series rolling into Europe and one of the biggest US races in town. When you add to the mix Ironman Florida 70.3, Ironman Austria - and on the domestic scene the Marazion Middle - there’s lots of build up to cover.

Here is your weekly round up of who is racing where!

Elgezabel will defend his title at Wimbleball

The Ironman UK 70.3 2011 champion, Mikel Elgezabel. has announced that he will be returning to Wimbleball to defend his title in 2012.

The Spaniard wasn’t amongst the favourites last year, but a killer bike leg over the hills ensured that he pressed on to victory - beating the likes of race day favourite Stephen Bayliss.

The 2012 race is shaping up to be a cracker and, whilst still too early for he full pro field to be announced, already contains Jon Hotchkiss, Stephen Bayliss, Mark Threlfal, Erich Wegscheider, Kamil van Beijnum, Oliver Simon and Martin Cain. Keep an eye out for Nick Baldwin as well - this young age grouper is a strong candidate for overall amateur and is aiming to turn pro in 2013.

In the ladies, we will see Bella Bayliss in action here again and Corrine Abraham will be looking for KPR points and a podium. Interest in the age group race comes in the form of former track world cycling champion, Rebecca Romero as she continues her Ironman journey towards a target of sub-11 hours in Bolton.

Long course triathletes in action this weekend

Whilst the headlines were being made in Fuerteventura and Mallorca, several results elsewhere have trickled in through the magic of Twitter from UK and Irish long course pro’s racing elsewhere.

Interview: Corinne Abraham - ‘I want to race against the best’

Corinne Abraham, the long distance multi-sport specialist, had a great race in Ironman Galveston 70.3 at the weekend. She finished 17th Pro lady in a very talented field, which was her first WTC event of the season on the way to (hopefully) Kona qualification.

I caught up with Corinne to find out what her 2012 plans are and what it was like racing in Texas at the weekend.
