Bayliss and Bayliss to race Ironman UK

Both Bella and Stephen Bayliss have been announced as racing at the 2012 edition of Ironman UK.

Both have won the event before and won’t be coming to make up the numbers - they fight for this title with fierce athleticism. I still recall Bella’s quiet tears as she was forced to surrender her crown to Yvette Grice on the run leg in 2010.

Bella and Stephen Bayliss are in fine form this year having both claimed 2nd at the Ironman Lanzarote race this past weekend.

The Bayliss’ have joined Petr Vabrousek and Cyril Viennot on the starting line with more announcements to come.

Big weekend review: A Bayliss double, Paterson claims World Title and breakthrough Abraham performance.

It was a huge weekend on the WTC circuit and most of the headlines were written at Ironman Lanzarote – namely Graves suicide drive on the bike and the Bayliss’ demonstrating the perfectly paced Ironman to take double podiums.

Lanzarote wasn’t the only race though and British Isles triathletes were performing at Ironman Texas, Columbia, the ITU World Cross Tri World Championships and much more.

Bella and Stephen Bayliss grab a double podium

Ironman Lanzarote promised to be a cracker and it delivered. British pro racers played a massive part in this classic version of the Ironman race and many played their parts in today’s drama.

At the sharp end, it was Clan Bayliss who demonstrated their permanent class - to remind everyone of what a dominant force they are when trained and peaked. Both claimed second in their respective categories, with perhaps Bella grabbing more of the headlines being as it was her first race at this distance for over a year.

The Ironman UK 70.3 2011 champion, Mikel Elgezabel. has announced that he will be returning to Wimbleball to defend his title in 2012.

The Spaniard wasn’t amongst the favourites last year, but a killer bike leg over the hills ensured that he pressed on to victory - beating the likes of race day favourite Stephen Bayliss.

The 2012 race is shaping up to be a cracker and, whilst still too early for he full pro field to be announced, already contains Jon Hotchkiss, Stephen Bayliss, Mark Threlfal, Erich Wegscheider, Kamil van Beijnum, Oliver Simon and Martin Cain. Keep an eye out for Nick Baldwin as well - this young age grouper is a strong candidate for overall amateur and is aiming to turn pro in 2013.

In the ladies, we will see Bella Bayliss in action here again and Corrine Abraham will be looking for KPR points and a podium. Interest in the age group race comes in the form of former track world cycling champion, Rebecca Romero as she continues her Ironman journey towards a target of sub-11 hours in Bolton.
