Ironman Wales
Ironman Wales is only one year old but already it is a race so special that it feels like an old favourite to those who competed in year 1.
Located in a stunning area of natural beauty, this is the second Ironman race on British shores and as such offers vital Kona qualifying points to the pro’s and age-group slots to the amateurs.
Athletes start with a dip in the sea (which has a reputation for being bumpy) for two laps before heading out onto its iconic bike route. The bike course is 180km of Pembrokeshire’s finest scenery (think countryside and castles) but also its toughest climbs. In fact, in terms of metres climbed, Ironman Wales is recognised as one of the toughest bike courses in the country. The race then finishes through the village of Tenby where an incredible atmosphere takes over the town.
If 2011 is anything to go by then Ironman Wales is arguably the event that has come closest to replicating the feel of one of the large European races, whilst still retaining everything that is great about racing in Britain.
