Meet the winner, Johnny Nicol!

Beyond Going Long recently ran a competition for one lucky reader to gain free entry into one of the most hotly anticipated new triathlons on the race calendar, the Maxifuel Marlow Middle Triathlon, organised by F3 events. Held in the riverside town of Marlow, it consists of a 1.9km swim in the River Thames followed by an undulating 86km bike course through the surrounding countryside before finishing with a fast and flat 20km run course.

Johnny Nicol was the lucky winner so I caught up with him to find out how much he was looking forward to racing.

I spoke to Johnny about the race, his background in triathlon and what the race meant to him:

I did my first triathlon in 2004 and worked my way up to Ironman Austria in 2008 (11.52). My best result is probably 4.54 at a tough Weymouth Middle distance.

My last race was the Outlaw 2010, which I finished in 12:14, off the back of 1 proper long ride and max training run of 10 miles! After that I decided not to take part in another long distance race until I had the time to train properly for it as I have 4 young children and I decided it was not fair on the family to spend hours training.

My main aim is to enjoy it. I have really missed training and especially racing. I dont think I have swam more than half a dozen times since the Outlaw in 2010 and running has been hit and miss. I have done a few long rides recently as I am doing a charity cycle for the FF Charity and Help for Heroes in a weeks time where we are cycling to every fire station in Leicestershire (approx 145 miles ) in under 12 hours. Some of the guys riding are real novices so it should be interesting.

I will have a time in mind but havent thought that through yet - maybe go for sub 5:30?

I think that winning this entry has shown me how much I have missed racing, I was so excited to get the news and cant wait till race day. Will it lead to more races this year…who knows?

Congratulations to Johnny and I’ll be following his progress here. Johnny won by becoming a fan of the Facebook page. If you haven’t already why not!

I have a fantastic offer if you missed out on this prize. F3 events are offering an exclusive 20% off race entry for readers of Beyond Going Long - entry is now only £76 for you.
