Jacqui Slack and Ben Allen reflect on XTERRA England

This years XTERRA England was a thrilling affair, with South African Conrad Stoltz and American Emma Garrard emerging victorious after a tough and challenging course at the Vachery Estate in Cranleigh.

In the field were world-class talents and returning champions from 2013, Jacqui Slack and Ben Allen. Neither could defend their title, with both posting 4th places in what was a very deep and talented field, but these two are ingrained in the wonderful world of off-road triathlon and this particular event as the cows and fantastic purpose built singletrack of the event itself.

We caught up with Jacqui and Ben to find out how they found the race and what their hopes were for the world championships in Maui, Hawaii.

Hi guys, congratulations on your recent 4ths at XTERRA England! I know you wanted to come here and defend your titles but how did you find the race and how did it pan out for you?

JS: We had a great experience at Xterra England. Vachery Estate is a perfect venue for an Xterra race and it really showcases the stunning English country side. The course is one that doesn’t particularly suit my strengths, I have to admit I’m not great a those tight corners or the power accelerations you need for this type of course. However everything went well but on the day I just couldn’t match the speed of Emma, Helena and Chantel who have proved over the last few years they really are the cream of the crop in our sport.

BA: The British Off-Road Triathlon community is growing in leaps and bounds and to be involved in another successful race in the amazing Vachary Estate was a highlight this season. Jacqui and I always have fantastic support from family and friends and it definitely makes it very special to race around knowing your family is there cheering you on. Unfortunately I was sick in the lead up to the race and didn’t have the energy to challenge Conrad for the title. I did my best with what I had and enjoyed the whole experience of Xterra in the UK.

A lot of work went on in the course from 2013 to 2014, what were the key differences for you and how much did you enjoy this course. How does it compare to others on the circuit?

BA & JS: Its very different to many of the courses in Europe because it is so flat and technical. It’s also one of the only Xterra races to have 95% single track which is pretty awesome. It’s also the most amazing course for the spectators they get to see you so many times, through all the twists and turns, in and out of transition it really makes for a special race for your supporters too.

The depth in the field seemed deeper this year, how tough did the competition make it for you?

BA: The quality of athletes on the startline at this years Xterra UK race was awesome. It just goes to show that the sport is really starting to take off and more and more people are beginning to understand the “Live More” spirit and enjoy what Xterra has to offer… You only need to experience it once to be hooked!

JS: Last year I had it very much my own way which was a lovely feeling however this year the level of female competitors has gone up 100%. I love the fact that the female fields are more competitive this year its far more rewarding when you have great performances and it makes you continually raise your game.

What are your reflections on your seasons as a whole? What have been the highlights and what have been the lowlights?

JS: There has been plenty of highs and lows. A great race for me was coming 3rd at the Asian Pacific champs in April and it was special because my Mum flew over to Aus to watch Ben and I race. We also had lots of Aussie support and there was a great buzz around the event. I’ve had some disappointing experiences this year one that stands out was the Xterra Spain race it you read my blog you will see why.

Our life is full of many ups and downs but its important to make the most of every opportunity and stay happy.

BA: The life that Jacqui and I choose to live isn’t an easy one, but if it was easy then everyone would do it. The ups and downs make us the poeple we are today. I am proud of the consistency I have shown in all my races staying in the top 5 at every event I have competed at this season. A massive low was at the ITU Cross World Champs in Germany where I only made 500m of the bike due to my front wheel exploding cracking the rim and blowing off the tyre knotting itself around my front fork. Although I was heart broken, I have learn a valuable lesson and it has only made me stronger for future races.

And plans for the last few months of the year, will you be hitting Maui?

BA & JS: Yes we will. Ben and I will spend some time in the US training for Maui. We have a good set up in the US and its great to finally get some uninterrupted training blocks in so we will be firing on all cylinders come Maui.

Jacqui, are you aware you are 2 championships away from levelling Sam Gardners XTERRA record and 3 away from being the most successful English off-road triathlete? What would that mean to you and is it something you are chasing?

Wow I didn’t realize that. Sam, Julie and Lesley have all been incredibly inspiring athletes, I remember a few years ago when I first contacted Sam about training for Xterra and he was super helpful little did I know this sport would become my life. I still see myself very new into xterra with so much still to learn so I’ll definitely be chasing those titles!

For many in the UK, XTERRA England is their first experience of off-road triathlon. What advice would you give a first timer or someone who is considering it for next year?

BA: I always say, just making the start line is the hardest battle you will face. Once there you can relax and enjoy everything that you have worked hard for. Wether it be a new PR, just finishing or qualifying for world champs. For me I am always happy come race day, because I train extremely hard and I get the chance to showcase my skills though a sport I love.

JS: To have a go and get stuck in. If possible go to some of the MTB centres around the UK and practice your skills, its really helps riding with other people. MTBing is about fun and the more relaxed you are the more you will enjoy it.

We’ve been lucky to have you both racing in the UK several times this year across the XTERRA and Castle Triathlon Series, will you be back in 2015?

BA: Fantastic event with a unique theme to the races. I have never experienced racing around a beautiful English castle dated back centuries ago. Its hard not to sneak a peak in. The atmosphere is very laid back and I really like that at races. You can wander around and watch other athletes doing their best whilst experiencing a traditional English cup’O’tea…

JS: Yes for sure the Castle Races are very well organized in beautiful surroundings much like Xterra England. Not only do the races have super age rgroup and kids races they all offer a competitive pro field with some prize money up for grabs.
