Laptops with three new graphics are heading to the market. Two are based on the current Ampere architecture, but one is based on its predecessor.

Hardware manufacturers are often criticized for the way their products are rated, or even the entire chain, including companies like Intel, AMD, and Nvidia. The latest reason is the third named company, which unexpectedly announced new graphics called GeForce RTX 2050, MX570 and MX550.

Let’s start from the beginning that the current generation of Nvidia graphics is called GeForce RTX 30, and they are based on GPUs manufactured by the 8nm Ampere engineering process. Their predecessors with 12nm Turing cores bore the brand name GeForce RTX 20.

Given the name GeForce RTX 2050, one would expect it to be a card based on an older architecture. In fact, the new one is the GA107 core (Ampere), which also uses the GeForce RTX 3050 model. The announced graphics now offer the same number of Cuda cores, specialized units for ray tracing and artificial intelligence (Tensor).

However, the memory bus width was truncated from the original 128-bit to 64-bit. However, the novelty is associated with faster GDDR6 memory (14 Gb / s vs 12 Gb / s), and the capacity remains unchanged at 4 GB.

The output will also be lower due to limitations on a portion of the maximum waste heat, from which the resulting cycles are also derived. The TGP of the new card can be set in the range of 30 to 45 watts. The GeForce RTX 3050 had a limit of 80W.

GeForce RTX 3050 GPU frequencies range from 1,057 to 1,740MHz, and for GeForce RTX 2050 it should range from 1,155 to 1,477MHz.

Similar names, different geometry

Nvidia’s low-performance partition models have been denoted by the letters MX for some time, followed by the model number. The other two news are directed to this chapter. However, the manufacturer is not consistent here either. The GeForce MX570 belongs to the latest generation of Ampere, and the GA107 core is the base here as well. However, we do not know the card details.

On the other hand, the MX550 is based on the older Turing GPU, more precisely the TU117. However, even in this case, Nvidia has not revealed specific specifications. However, due to the legacy architecture, limited DLSS upgrade capabilities should be considered. Ray-tracing performance will also be lower, although given the modest parameters of the GA107 core, the MX570 and RTX 2050 models will not excel in this area either.

The first laptops with new graphics should hit the market next spring. Let’s add that at CES 2022, Nvidia should also introduce other new graphics for desktop PCs, and possibly laptops.
