NHL: No one picked Richard Bannick from the waiver list

No NHL club has selected Slovak hockey player Richard Pánik from the waiver list. However, the New York Islanders Department had yet to send him to the farm and kept him on staff.

The Islanders put the 30-year-old striker on their waiver list on Saturday, but no one has reached him within 24 hours. Islanders can still send him to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (AHL) farming team in the next phase of the season, without having to put a player on the waiver.

Islanders acquired Pánik on July 17 from Detroit in exchange for defender Nick Lady. According to the team agreement, the Red Wings retained part of their salary of 2.75 million, so the “islanders” pay the Slovak wing only half a year – $ 1.375 million. Bannick’s contract, which he signed as a Washington player, will expire after the 2022/2023 season.

After signing veterans Zden Chára and Zach Parise, the New York team has too many players on one-way contracts and, in addition, has a salary cap and needs to make room in the budget. In addition to Banek, defender Thomas Hickey, who was not chosen by anyone, also scored on Saturday. According to Newsday, General Manager Lou Lamoreello will wait until the last minute to adjust staff before the start of the year.

Bannick has worked in the NHL and in the past has worked in Tampa Bay, Toronto, Chicago, and Arizona. He came to Detroit at the end of the crucial part of last season from Washington with Czech forward Jakob Fran. He played 12 matches for the Red Wings, scoring four points for one goal and three assists.
