Microsoft introduced a special version of Windows 11, attacking Chromebooks

It should be used especially in schools.

  • Microsoft introduced a new special edition of Windows 11, especially for schools.
  • Windows 11 SE is supposed to compete with Chromebooks with Chrome OS.
  • The platform is solidly cloud oriented, but also works completely offline.
  • New applications can also be added, but the IT administrator is in charge of management.

However, this year Microsoft introduced a platform that you want to compete directly with devices running Google’s Chrome OS. However, instead of Windows 10X comes a special edition of Windows 11 Windows 11 SE (special edition).

Windows 11 Special Edition is directly optimized for use in schools. In this segment (especially in the US) Chromebooks are very popular.

On the other hand, Microsoft has tried its luck in the past with proprietary platforms, but failed well. It promised a lot, for example, from Windows 10 S, but the project disappeared somewhat without much response from partners or customers.

Windows 11 SE is visually and functionally based on Windows 11, which, among other things, completely reconstructed the basic user environment. It definitely looks more modern and intuitive than Windows 10.

Among other things, Microsoft wants to grab the attention of its platform with full offline support. Major Office applications such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote and OneDrive can be used offline on Windows 11 SE devices – as part of a Microsoft 365 license.

For example, OneDrive stores files locally (on each device) so students can access them without an active internet connection. When turned on, the system will take care of synchronizing related items automatically.

However, Windows 11 SE is not a closed system that can, for example, run only “related” applications. We can also use a whole bunch of third-party solutions, Microsoft mentions for example Zoom, Chrome and the like.

Windows 11 SE typically runs so that individual devices (student computers) are managed by IT administrators. Solutions like Windows Autopilot or Intune for Education will be able to use it here.

Administrators will directly decide when the appropriate updates will be installed, after which the updates will be installed automatically and in silent mode. At the same time, only administrators should be able to install (additional) apps or services on devices. It is also a very cloud-focused system, which should set it apart from other Windows systems in the educational field.

The new system is usually introduced in new facilities. Therefore, Microsoft presented its first – a product from its workshop in the form of the Surface Laptop SE. In addition, devices from other manufacturers will appear soon – remember Microsoft Asus, Acer, Dell, HP or Lenovo. It will be powered by chips from both Intel and AMD. They will come to market gradually over the coming months.

The Surface Laptop SE is a relatively inexpensive device with a starting price of $249 and up. It includes, for example, a TFT screen “Liquid Crystal” with a low resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels (16: 9 aspect ratio), Intel Celeron N4020 processors, respectively. Intel Celeron N4120 processor, Intel UHD Graphics 600, 4 or 8 GB of RAM (DDR4), 64 GB or 128 GB eMMC.

There’s also Wi-Fi: 802.11ac (2 x 2), Bluetooth 5.0 LE, or a typical battery life of up to 16 hours. USB-A and USB-C ports, 2W speakers, and a webcam were also mentioned.
