British demands lead to Brexit dispute “Further breakdown of relationships“Between the United Kingdom and the European Union,” Ireland’s Foreign Minister Simon Coweny announced on Sunday.
He responded to a statement by British Brexit Minister David Frost, reiterating that the European Court of Justice (ECJ) should not oversee compliance with the terms of the Commonwealth’s withdrawal agreement from the United Kingdom.
Release of proposals
.Does it really want to go the pre-agreed path (British government) or does it want another breakdown in relations?Connie asked on Twitter.
The European Commission (EC) is due to release its recommendations next week to end the stalemate over the border with Northern Ireland.
Northern Irish Protocol
The Brexit agreement is called the Northern Ireland Protocol. Its purpose is to ensure that the open border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland remains open as part of the European Community, while preventing British goods from entering the EU public market without customs clearance.
Unionists, however, argue that this creates a trade border between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which undermines their position as part of the United Kingdom. London considers the border restrictions on goods to be annoying, and therefore wants to change the relevant parts of the Brexit agreement.
