The White House’s chief medical advisor, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said holiday parties with vaccinated family and friends carry a much lower risk, even though the Omicron version of COVID-19 is spreading across the United States and “causing many infections.”
“If you’ve been vaccinated, your family has been vaccinated, you have friends who have been vaccinated — and hopefully extended — you can still generally enjoy socializing at home,” Fauci said in an interview with CNBC Friday. “Squawk Box.”
According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, hospital admissions for Covid have increased nearly 20% in the past two weeks, from an average of 68,400 in the past seven days. At the height of the Delta wave in September, there were more than 100,000 patients with COVID in hospitals.
While delta is the predominant form in the United States, cases of Omicron are estimated to double every day or two. TuesdayOf course, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that Omicron accounts for about 3% of serial cases in the United States. The rate of COVID positivity in New York doubled from 3.9% on December 9 to 7.8% on December 12, according to officials there I mentioned on ThursdayAnd
According to an analysis of CNBC data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, daily cases of Covid increased 27% to a seven-day average of 122,000 before Thanksgiving. The number of cases is down from a recent peak, with the country reporting an average of more than 170,000 cases per day in September.
“When you go into large public indoor spaces where there are a lot of people, you have to be careful,” Fauci said. “That’s why you should wear a mask in such circumstances.”
If the number of Covid cases continues to increase, Fauci said, “people may need to be more restrictive” in their vacation plans. “But for now, people who have been vaccinated and boosted should feel reasonably comfortable.”
“Never risk. It certainly is under any circumstances,” he said.
Despite the growing number of cases, Omicron Fauci said it would be appropriate for him to fly with caution if necessary.
“If I don’t have any trouble getting on the plane. I’ll get vaccinated. I’m promoted. I know we have to wear a mask on the plane,” he said, adding that he had no plans to fly anywhere at the moment because his job kept him in Washington.
Fauci said the masks work in planes and indoors, like airports. “There is no doubt that cloth masks work,” he said. “N95 is the best. But it is relatively uncomfortable to wear. Not many people wear it. But the cloth mask is just as good as a regular surgical mask.”
Fauci said the best way to prevent Kovid is vaccination and promotion.
