Corona virus: Russia counts the population, infections and deaths from the Corona virus reach their peak

The national census will run until November 14.

In Russia, a census began on Friday, which was postponed several times due to the epidemic of the Corona virus. This was reported by Agence France-Presse.

The national census will run until November 14, with preliminary results likely to be known in April. In an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus, part of the census will be conducted online, Russia’s Rosstat said.

As AFP reports, two previous censuses have been conducted since the fall of the Soviet Union in Russia in 2010 and 2002. One of the few cases in Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union was recorded in 2014, when Moscow annexed Crimea, more than 2.5 joined million people to the population of Russia.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia’s population has steadily declined. The reasons are mainly due to the low birth rate, inequality in access to health care and the migration of the population, according to AFP.

Biggest decrease in population

According to the coronavirus epidemic, the problem has worsened. According to Rosstat, at least 400,000 people have died in Russia from COVID-19,

According to Rosstat, the population of Russia was 146.2 million at the beginning of this year, which is 510,000 less than last year. At the same time, this was the largest population decline in the past fifteen years. From January 1 to the end of August this year, the population decreased by 595,000.

The Russian Statistical Office is following a broader definition of deaths related to COVID-19, while official statistics take into account deaths in which an autopsy showed that the main cause of death was COVID-19.

According to AFP, the birth rate in Russia is also declining because the generation of people who gradually became parents at this time were born in the 1990s, when the country’s birth rate – due to post-Soviet economic uncertainty – was at a low level.

Maximum number of deaths

President Vladimir Putin, who has cited poverty as the main factor for which Russians choose to have fewer children, has already introduced several financial incentives to encourage citizens to have more children.

The census in Russia is taking place at a time when the country has reached its peak since the beginning of the epidemic in the number of cases and deaths associated with the Corona virus. According to official data, 32,196 new confirmed cases of coronavirus and 999 more deaths from coronavirus were recorded during the past 24 hours.
