Jan Frodeno set for Ironman debut at Ironman European Championships

Olympic Gold medal winner (2008) Jan Frodeno is set to make his long-awaited debut at the Ironman distance in a bid to qualify for the Ironman World Championships later this year. The German star of the sport will look to qualify with a win at the Ironman European Championships being held in Frankfurt on July 6th 2014.

Frodeno, who also has a silver medal from the Ironman 70.3 European Championships 2013 and won his first Ironman 70.3 race in Auckland recently, is an exciting edition to the long distance mix, with every indication that he is able to transfer his short course talent to Ironman racing.

XTERRA Mauritius added to world tour

TEAM Unlimited LLC, owners and producers of the XTERRA World Tour, has added the XTERRA Mauritius off-road triathlon presented by Outrigger Mauritius Resort and Spa to the 2014 schedule of XTERRA World Championship qualifying events.

The inaugural race on the island nation situated in the Indian Ocean off the southeast coast of Africa is slated for May 24, 2014 at the Bois Cheri Tea Estate bordering the mountainous Black River Gorges National Park.

Challenge Family arrives in Brazil with Challenge Florianopolis

Global triathlon series Challenge Family today announced their first race in Latin America with the launch of Challenge Florianopolis in Brazil. Based at Jurere International in the north of the island of Santa Catarina, the inaugural race will take place on 30 November over the half distance.

Challenge Florianopolis will feature a fast, flat course with the potential to record some of the fastest times in the world. Timed for the start of the Brazilian summer season, the seas are generally calm and the cycle is along the smooth highway road surfaces while the half marathon is along the tree-lined streets of the beautiful Jurere Internacional neighborhood.

Carfrae and O’Donnell to race with Challenge Family North America

Challenge Family announced today that two-time World Champion, Mirinda Carfrae and Ironman Brazil Champion, Timothy O’Donnell will take part in two of their upcoming Challenge North American events. Carfrae, who won the World Championships in Hawaii for the second time in October, will race both Challenge Atlantic City and Challenge St Andrews in 2014. The Kona course record holder, who is originally from Australia, recently married fellow pro triathlete, Timothy O’Donnell, the top American finisher in Hawaii last year. O’Donnell, who also finished fifth overall in Hawaii and is considered one of the top long course triathletes in the world, will also be taking part in these Challenge Family races.

Challenge Philippines to feature world-class field of world champions and Olympians

Philippine triathlon is one of the fastest growing endurance sports communities in the world and this weekend will see the gun go off on Saturday 22 February at the inaugural Challenge Philippines in the spectacular setting of Bataan.

As well as over 700 age group athletes, the event has attracted some of the top names in the sport including four-time world champion Chris ‘Macca’ McCormack (AUS), keen to take on this tough but stunning course.

Triathlete dies during Brisbane race

A young triathlete has passed away having just completed the Hell of the West triathlon in Goondiwindi, Brisbane. The victim, named in local media as Australian Tom Lyons (21), collapsed shortly after crossing the finish line of the race being held on Sunday 2nd February, in hot weather conditions.

Mr Lyons was one of 800 competitors who completed the 2km swim, 80km bike, 20km run in conditions that saw temperatures rise up to 34.4 degrees. The event website describes the race as ‘one of the toughest races in Australia and ‘not for the faint hearted’.

It was reported that Mr Lyons finished the race in good spirits but collapsed soon afterwards.

Beyond Going Long would like to extend their sympathies to the family and friends of Mr Lyons and all those affected by this tragedy.

All Australian victory at inaugural Challenge Melbourne‏

It was all about the Aussies today at the inaugural Scody Challenge Melbourne, with Tim Berkel and Annabel Luxford both showcasing stellar performances to take out the title in the elite male and female events.

Liz Blatchford and Roger Witz Barnes were scheduled to race pro, but both were late DNS for the race and us such, there was no elite domestic representation in Melbourne.

Scody Challenge Melbourne attracts sell-out field‏

The global Challenge Family triathlon series heads to Melbourne, Australia this weekend for its inaugural event.

The Scody Challenge Melbourne event is set to be one of the most exciting events of the season. The event has attracted a very competitive international field, including race favourite Liz Blatchford, with entries selling out in less than a week after they went on sale in May last year. With over 1400 competitors including more than 30 elites (as of Friday 24/1/2014), the event will kick off just before sunrise at Brighton Beach, setting the stage for a magnificent finish to this first long course triathlon to be held in the inner city region.
