New York. At least 19 people were killed, including nine children, and dozens were injured in a fire that broke out in a high-rise apartment building in New York City on Sunday.
This was announced by local officials, according to the Associated Press and Agence France-Presse.
The fire broke out in the lower part of the 19-storey Twin Park apartment building in the Bronx. The New York Fire Department said about 200 of its members had intervened at the scene.
New York Mayor Eric Adams for Television CNN He said that in addition to the 19 dead, 63 have been confirmed so far, 32 of whom are in serious condition. Most of the wounded who were taken to five hospitals inhaled smoke.
According to the firefighters, the fire resulted from as yet unknown causes in a duplex apartment on the second and third floors. The doors to this apartment were found open, which apparently accelerated the fire and allowed smoke to spread rapidly to the upper floors.
“We found victims on every floor and carried them into cardiac or respiratory arrest,” Daniel Negro, a fire brigade commander, told reporters.
New York officials described Sunday’s fire as one of the worst in the city in decades. It happened just days after a fire in an apartment building in Philadelphia killed 12 people, including eight children.
