The comeback Kings and Queens of triathlon

This week saw some great returns to the sport after injury

For me, the top news coming out of the world of triathlon has been that of the amazing performance from Cat Morrison in Ironman 70.3 St Croix but also in returning action has been Julie Dibens, Nico Munoz Ward and Paul Hawkins.

Check out this quick update on the comeback Kings and Queens this week!

Paul Hawkins suffers injury nightmare

Paul Hawkins comes 3rd at Ironman UK

PRO Paul Hawkins season is in disruption after suffering a nasty collar bone break whilst out on a training ride in Spain. The injury occurred on Saturday after Hawkins hit a huge pot-hole at speed.

Fortunately he was prevented from further injury by his Lazer Helmet, which protected his head in the incident.

Winter triathlon training with Paul Hawkins: Part III

Over the last few months we have followed the winter training blocks of pro triathletes Paul Hawkins and Joe Skipper, as they log some serious miles, big climbs and run hard to gain the base layer of fitness that provides a springboard for a successful pro assault on the Ironman circuit next year.

Here is the final installment from Paul Hawkins as he returns to the UK after a camp that took in the classic climbs of the region around Kinetic PB, trail runs, 2nd in the Cuevas Half Marathon, quality training with top level triathletes plus some lovely sun that enables all of this to take place.

The third in this series is the second post from pro-triathlete Paul Hawkins. I’m following the progress of several pro triathletes over the winter months as they chart their hard work and dedicated training blocks, providing a fascinating insight into what level of dedication is required in order to compete at the very highest level in iron-distance racing.

Here is the second update from Paul Hawkins, who is training in Spain at the Kinetic PB facility.

Joe Skipper signs up to race Abu Dhabi

Joe Skipper National Middle Distance Champs 2011

Manchester-based pro, Joe Skipper, will kick off his long course season racing at the iconic Abu Dhabi triathlon on 2nd March 2013.

Skipper, who had been focussing on middle distances in 2012, surprised himself by taking on Challenge Barcelona at the last minute and posting the 2nd fastest UK debut time in history and the 11th fastest British time ever. His sub 8:30 was good enough for 5th and has marked him out as ‘one to watch’ in 2013.

We follow pro triathletes Paul Hawkins and Joe Skipper through the winter months

No doubt many of us are now turning our thoughts to laying down a base over winter. It’s so important not to lose your fitness but also it is equally important to regenerate ahead of next year.

In a new series, Beyond Going Long will look at how the pro’s train over winter – the kind of work required to get yourself into the physical and mental condition with which to assault the long distance triathlon game at a professional level. Over the next few weeks, our guest writers and pro triathletes Paul Hawkins and Joe Skipper will be writing about their winter training preparations.
