Rebecca Romero to race Kona

Rebecca Romero Ironman UK

Olympic medalist, world champion and now Ironman, Rebecca Romero, has accepted a coveted age-group slot at Ironman Hawaii after her excellent qualifiying performance on her long course debut at Ironman UK last month.

Her performance at the race was worth a time of 11:10:07, which was good enough to secure 6th overall lady, 2nd fastest age-group lady and a Kona qualifiying finishing position.

Romero has tweeted:

So I’ve officially accepted my place for Ironman World Champs Kona, Hawaii!!!! It’s on Oct 13th…only seven and a bit weeks away!

Started training on Sat after a few weeks off. Totally battered. Better get my game on if I’m gonna mix with the big guns in Kona….arghh!!

Rebecca Romero is one of the finest and most versatile female athletes the country has produced. After medalling at consecutive Olympic games in fast-twitch explosive sports such as rowing and sprint cycling, she showed she is pretty hot at the long stuff as well!

Corinne Abraham turns down the Kona call

British pro-triathlete, Corinne Abraham has announced that she will not take her place at the Ironman Hawaii World Championships on October 13th.

Abraham had earlier made it her goal for this year, but instead in an open letter to the WTC, she withdrew citing that  ‘it is not a financially viable option for me to race at Kona and does not fit with my longer term aspirations as a triathlete’.

British pro’s book their Kona ticket

The long road to Kona is almost at its end – and whilst there is plenty of time for more dramas to unfold before then, the majority of the pro field has now been assembled. As of July 29th, the top 40 men and top 25 women have had their slots validated and can fully focus on their championship preperations.

For the rest of the field with aspirations of competing – there remains just 10 more spaces in the male field and 5 in the female.

So who has made it so far? Find out below!

Rebecca Romero qualifies for Kona

Ironman_UK_Dec2011

The two-time Olympic medalist and now Ironman, Rebecca Romero, has qualified for the Ironman World Championships at the first attempt.

Romero competed at Ironman UK where she put in an excellent performance, finishing the course in a time of 11:10:07. This was competitive enough to secure 6th overall, 2nd fastest age grouper and a coveted Kona slot.

Rebecca Romero had been worried about her swim and run times, whilst under pressure to produce on the bike given her background. She needn’t have been. A 1:09:00 swim (aided by lessons from Lucy Hall), 5:30:34 bike (she held back apparently!) and a 3:59:09 run (aided by that pacing on the bike) were extremely competitive and places her as one of the countries finest age-groupers.

April was a relatively quiet one for WTC races and our Pro racers that hail from the British Isles – but there were some movers and shakers that have climbed up (as well as sunk down) the rankings.

Kona Pro Rankings: February 2012 Update

Love them or hate them, Kona rankings are here to stay and are the vital metric by which the WTC measures qualification for its World Championships at Ironman Hawaii.

It’s early in the season, and not many races have been run – but there are already more than a few Brits occupying the vital qualification slots and even more bubbling under with the intention of being at the ‘great dance’ in October.
