Triathlete of the Month (May): Rachel Joyce

triathlete of the month

In the first of a new series, I’ll be awarding a new award to a triathlete that Beyond Going Long believes has had the best performance or string of results that warrant this accolade.

Each award will be given on a monthly basis and will take into account the performances across the middle and long distance events that have occured across the world. The award is open to pro’s and elite age-groupers and will always be awarded to those that hail from the British Isles.

Without further ado, over to this months winner!

Joyce takes 2nd in blistering Ironman Melbourne

Ironman Melbourne

Ironman Melbourne (raced as the Asia Pacific Championship) got of to a blistering start as an event. Whilst Caroline Steffen laid down a crazy-quick time 8:34:51 to take the win, GB’s very own Rachel Joyce was recording a personal best to finish second in 8:46:09. In the process of taking 2nd, Joyce finished with a 3:05:02 marathon.

In the men’s race there were 2 Ironman warhorses battling out for the win. Craig Alexander defeated Cameron Brown for the title of Asia-Pacific Champion. In terms of British interest, Joel Jameson, winner of Outlaw 2011, was racing in the pro division and cracked the 9-hour barrier. He finished in a time of 8:59:28, which was good enough for 25th pro but 33rd overall.

More to come as news filters out of Melbourne – including updates on any British age-group athletes who have podiumed.

Interview: Leanda Cave explains her withdrawal from Ironman Melbourne

leanda Cave

Leanda Cave has withdrawn this week from her scheduled race at Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship (in Melbourne). This came as a shock as she was one of the pre-race favourites.

I caught up with her to find out the reason and who she felt was favourite to win in her abscence.

Crowie Racing the Brits in Aus

With 3-time world champ having just announced that he will be racing in Australia at the upcoming Ironman Asia-Pacific Championships (Melbourne, March 22) , I thought I’d take a look at what pro’s have registered to compete.

In the ladies race Leanda Cave and Rachel Joyce are down as starters. The mens sole representative is Joel Jameson.
