Eimear Mullan successfully defended her Ironman 70.3 UK title in Wimbleball yesterday, although it was a close battle all day with Holly Lawrence. In the end, Mullan used her famous run-kick to secure the hard-fought victory on the final lap of the run.

After her win, regular contributor James Mitchell caught up with Eimear, who hinted she may well build on this victory and take that form into Ironman Austria in 2 weeks time.

2nd and Silver at the ETU Challenge Barcelona Middle Distance Championships

Last week, Ireland’s Eimear Mullan picked up a major medal in the form of Silver at the ETU Challenge Barcelona Middle Distance Championships – coming 2nd to Camilla Pedersen and ahead of Maria Czesnik. This was the latest great result from Mullan following her change in set-up and hooking up with the Team TBB squad in Lanzarote.

I caught up with Eimear following this great result to hear a bit more about the race and the early part of her season.

With 2013 marking their transition into long distance racing with remarkable success, both Don and and Clarke have already proved they are a force to be reckoned with, fending off veteran Ironman athletes to finish in podium positions; Don recently came 3rd in Ironman 70.3 South Africa, whilst Clarke took 2nd place at Ironman 70.3 St. Croix.

Gomez and Pedersen crowned Challenge Barcelona ETU Champions

Eimear Mullan takes silver medal

With the results still coming in for both age-group and elites, it is Camilla Pedersen and Javier Gomez who have written the headlines by taking the gold medals at the ETU Middle Distance Championships and take the Challenge Barcelona title. Irelands new star, Eimear Mullan continues her great form after her switch to the Team TBB stable, to take silver.

Gomez won the race, in what was pitched as Gomez vs Macca, comfortably in his distance debut, with Macca coming a relatively distant 6th overall. Check out the podium results here.

The Lanzarote Volcano Triathlon, a pre-cursor for the upcoming Ironman Lanzarote, was raced at the weekend and it was a successful run-out for the Team TBB Lanzarote squad.

Ritchie Nichols claimed 2nd in the very competitive men’s race, whilst Eimear Mullan was also second on the podium with Bella Bayliss in third. Irish PRO, Owen Cummins was 11th in the men’s race.

Check out the race report from Club La Santa here.

Competition is hot for the Volcano Triathlon

There is fierce competition for the Volcano Triathlon being held this weekend in Lanzarote. The race has attracted a strong lineup of distance triathletes given its proximity to Ironman Lanzarote and there is a large British and Irish presence contesting for the overall title.

Up to race are the Team TBB Lanzarote squad made up of Stephen Bayliss, Ritchie Nichols, Bella Bayliss and Eimear Mullan. They wont have it all their own way with the likes of Bert Jaemmer and Rasmus Petraeus strong contenders for the male title and Camilla Pedersen a girl with real quality.

The Volcano Triathlon will be raced on Saturday 27th April.

Eimear Mullan Challenge Fuerteventura interview

Eimear Mullan continued her excellent form into 2013 by claiming silver at last weekends Challenge Fuerteventura.

The Irish talent has hooked up this year with Team TBB and appears to be blossoming under the regime that seeks to make athletes the ‘best they can be’.

James Mitchell caught up with Eimear with a video interview to find out how she found the race, what it was like competing with the reigning ITU World Champion and much more.
