Ironman 70.3 Weymouth to run as standalone event in 2017

IRONMAN® today confirmed that IRONMAN 70.3® Weymouth will take place on Sunday 17th September 2017, with entries opening on Wednesday 9th November at midday.

Following speculation on the future of the full distance race Kevin Stewart, Managing Director IRONMAN UK commented, “Weymouth was the first time we had combined a full distance and 70.3 on the same day.  We have undertaken a review of this format since the event with the authorities and consultation with the local communities affected by the road closures.

The conclusion is that we will withdraw the full distance event from the race going forward to ensure that we can continue to deliver the best race experience for athletes.  We continue to offer IRONMAN UK in July and IRONMAN Wales in September for those looking to race full distance.”

An eagerly anticipated new addition to the 2016 UK calendar, IRONMAN 70.3 Weymouth attracted over 2,800 entries in its first year making it the largest IRONMAN event in the UK.  IRONMAN 70.3 Weymouth, which saw Pro athletes Emma Gallant and Stuart Hayes crowned inaugural Champions of the event, will also continue to be a Pro race.

Weymouth and Dorset provide the perfect setting and weekend away for athletes and supporters alike; Starting with a 1.2 mile sea swim in Weymouth Bay, against the backdrop of the Jurassic Coastline, athletes then embark on a 56 mile loop bike course, combining some hills to challenge together with lovely long descents amidst the beauty of the Dorset countryside.

Once back into transition, the final 13.1 mile half marathon run incorporates a super spectator friendly multi lap run around the town, harbour and historic seafront enabling thousands of crowds to line the entire course all the way to the finish line.

There will be 30 qualifying slots for the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. Professional athletes at IRONMAN 70.3 Weymouth will be competing for a total prize purse of $15,000 USD, with the race also offering P-500 KPR points.

For those athletes looking at their race season we now have 5 UK races open for entry covering IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire, IRONMAN 70.3 UK, IRONMAN UK and IRONMAN Wales. Furthermore, IRONMAN 70.3 Dublin will confirm its opening date shortly.
