Craig Twigg struggling to overcome injury

Craig Twigg

Craig Twigg is one of the most talented long course talents on the circuit from our fair island shores. He kicked his season off with a very decent 7th at Ironman South Africa and everything looked positive towards his target for Kona qualification in 2012.

Ironman racing is never that simple or easy though, and I had noticed a pattern of DNF’s building. I caught up with Craig to find out what was happening.

I interviewed Craig earlier this year and he was quite confident that he had the talent and season-long plan to deliver him to Kona. After a 7th at Ironman South Africa he planned to get some big points at Ironman Regensburg and Ironman Sweden. His preference for long distances mean that there weren’t any 70.3 races in the plan so it was always quite a big roll of the dice that he needed to get top results at his identified races.

That luck hasn’t manifested and I noticed he had a DNF at Regensburg but had been unable to find out what happened.

In the build up to Ironman Switzerland I spotted his name on the start list and heard from his race team director that Twigg was hoping for a big performance here. This would get some points on board and rescue the Kona bid. Unfortunately there was another DNF when I checked in on Monday morning.

Catching up with Craig he told me:

A hamstring injury that I’ve been struggling with for the past 12 weeks forced me out of Ironman Switzerland as it did in Regensburg too. I’ve been struggling with it and it’s not clearing up which is very frustrating. I’ve got to get it better and then reassess my season.

The season is by no means over for Craig assuming that he can shake off the injury this year but time is now very tight for a Kona qualification. Ironman Sweden is not far away. I wish Craig all the best in his rehabilitation.
